Post-conference Excursions - 9th September

 Full Day Óbidos and Fátima

There are a number of things that make this trip unforgettable. One, you run the risk of falling in love with each of the locations we’ll visit (we’re not kidding, the West is breathtaking). Then, there’s the visit to one of the most enchanting medieval towns in the country. And last, but by no means least, a visit to two of the country's most sacred of places: Nazaré: surfers’ paradise (thanks to the size of its sea's waves, which religiously appeals to everyone), and which is, at the same time, a traditional Portuguese fishing village and Fátima, the heart of Catholic faith and world pilgrimage site. The Shrine of Fátima is a must see and this year, welcomes Pope Francis to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima.

Half Day Visit to EVOA

You will departure from Estoril (Congress Centre) at 09.00 a.m. towards Leziria. The Great Lezíria of Vila Franca de Xira is an extensive area of elongated shape, with 14 acres, bordered on the west by the Tagus River, east by the Sorraia river and on the north the Tagus Estuary. This extensive floodplain results from patient and historic human intervention in order to consolidate the most productive agricultural area of the country, through the regularization of the banks of the Tagus, damming and an irrigation system and drainage. From this proximity to the estuary results a greater use by birds which concentrate here, enhanced by the extensive characteristics of agricultural systems, that provide refuge areas for many aquatic intertidal and suitable conditions for wintering and nesting of various species. Beyond bird watching, this area of six thousand acres presents other aspects of interest such as landscape, agriculture, animal production and life experience of those who work there.
